Red White and Blue Sangria
July 2nd, 2008
Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

What better way to celebrate the 4th of July weekend than with a cocktail? Here we are bringing you 3 variations on sangria so you can celebrate this All-American holiday in style. The sangria recipes below call for specific fruits depending on whether you are making red, white, or blue sangria. This is only meant to a guideline, there are no rules. Your best bet is to simply use the fruits of the season, there is no way you can go wrong. So make yourself a batch of sangria (or three)!
Red Sangria Recipe
Use tasty but inexpensive medium-bodied wine such as Merlot or Zinfandel. This is not the time to whip out the expensive stuff. Same thing can be said about the orange liquor, Triple Sec will do just fine. Save your Grand Marnier or Cointreau for the margaritas.
1 orange, sliced thin
1 lemon, sliced thin
½ cup raspberries
¼ cup sugar
1 bottle of red wine
½ cup fresh orange juice
¼ cup orange liquor
- In a large non-reactive bowl, very gently mash the citrus with the sugar. The idea here is to release the essential oils from the skin of the citrus while letting the sugar dissolve.
- Add the wine, orange juice and orange liquor. Stir until the sugar is totally dissolved.
- Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit in the chill box for at least a couple hours. The longer you let it sit the more incorporated and intense the flavors will be, so do not skip this step!
- Stir before serving to redistribute the fruit. Pour over ice, serve and enjoy!
White Sangria Recipe
Again, the same principal as the red sangria, use inexpensive light to medium white wine such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. You can substitute lemon/lime soda (7up, Sprite, etc) for ginger ale. When using an acidic wine like Sauvignon, the soda helps to mellow out both the acidity and the booziness and, overall, brightens the flavor.
1 lemon, sliced thin
1 cup white peaches, sliced
1 cup melon, cubed
¼ cup sugar
1 bottle of white wine
¼ cup orange liquor
2 cups ginger ale
- In a large non-reactive bowl, very gently mash lemon and sugar. Then combine the rest of the ingredients (minus the soda) and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
- Cover with plastic wrap and chill for a couple hours to let the flavors intensify.
- Right before serving, add the soda. Pour over ice, serve and enjoy!
Blue Sangria Recipe
Instead of Triple Sec, I used Blue Curaçao here. Curaçao liqueur is flavored with the dried peels of the laraha citrus fruit. The laraha is much more bitter than the orange, so the liqueur itself has varying degrees of bitterness. In short, it’s orange liquor with blue food coloring.
1 lemon, sliced thin
1 cup grapes
½ cup blueberries
½ cup blackberries
¼ cup sugar
1 bottle of white wine
¼ cup Blue Curaçao
2 cups ginger ale
- Follow the steps from the white sangria recipe above, but using the blue sangria ingredient list.

@Rob, Any plans for the 4th? We are going to be posted on Ponto Beach, North of the jetti, right south of the camp sites. Biking distance from you! Come out and play!

Such a fantastic creative idea! I personally love the white sangria, but alas it’s winter here in Sydney and there are no white peaches… bookmarked for Summer though! ;)

@Christie – Frozen peaches will work, just not the caned stuff :)

That recipe is very cool. Have a great 4th July. We wish we were with you guys. I would love to be kicking it in PB baby!

Looks tasty but I am not sure if it’s going to beat out the pitchers of margaritas we will be having at Jose’s Courtroom in La Jolla.

@adman You know you are too old for PB! Thats not a family man’s place ;) Plus San Diego banned beach boozing so PB and MB just wont be the same!

The margaritas are nothing extraordinary but they come in pitchers with some good Mexican food for Fourth of July. It’s become tradition for the last few years now.
So for this time, quantity of over quality rules. Happy 4th!

Quantity of over quality, sounds perfectly American ;)
Looking at the website photo, I have been to Jose’s. But it was pretty late at night, I recall having a 3 Wiseman for a friend’s Birthday. Never again.
I love me some good Mexican food to kick off my weekend!

@admin Besides the normal local Mexican joints ending in ***berto’s, Trujillo’s on College has some great Polla Asada. If you want a taste of TJ check out the farmers market on Imperial. http://entertainment.signonsandiego.com/places/san-diego-farmers-market/
For high end Mexican food, check out Candelas if your looking for a good place to take a date or just have some excellent food. Get the goats milk chocolate dessert. http://www.candelas-sd.com/
Casa de Madera in Hillcrest is another semi-high end place but I wasn’t really impressed. Food usability was at an all time low; slippery food on dishes that you can’t corner the food to cut it. Lack of salsa for us hot heads that drink the stuff wasn’t winning me over either.
For those late nights in Downtown San Diego, Valentine’s on Market is a great place to fill up on carne asada before your long drunken trek home.

Even though I’m in Canada, this recipe caught my eye. :-)
My daughter was going to a friend’s cottage for the weekend and had just asked me if I knew how to make sangria. I sent her these recipes and when she got home last night, she said that they were very good.
Great timing!

@Robin
Thanks for stopping by. To tell you the truth, I just needed an excuse to make sangria and Independence day just so happen to be around the corner. Last time we made some was over the Winter holidays. It worked out perfect :)
